Sometime in high school, I discovered Mary Stewart. I read everything she wrote and waited impatiently for her next novel. I read everything she ever published, including her children's books.

On Thursday, October 12, 2017, I discovered that all of her Gothics were on sale for Kindle and in a rash moment, purchased them all.

I devoured Thornyhold and to my delight, I still love as much as I did the first time and maybe a bit more as I now have life experience and can appreciate certain nuances now that I didn't back in the day. Much of the reason I love it is not only due to a complex plot and well-developed characters, but because even her minor characters have a few details that make them memorable. Another reason is the gorgeous way she writes. Her descriptions are vivid.

I want to live in Thornyhold.

i havent read my kindle edition yet. but i have read my old hardback copy so often the binding has cracked!
i have been waiting for this to be available on kindle since the kindle came out!!
I started reading Mary Stewart's books in the early 70s. After The Crystal Cave series I lost track of her writing. I am delighted to find her again. Her style of writing draws the reader into a world that is much more interesting and beautiful than average and at the same time totally believable.
I used to read Mary Stewart and thought I remembered suspense but this has very little. The book itself is SWEET. Of course, it is well-written but it's not much of a story. If you want a sweet, well-written story, then this is it; but, if you are expecting some Gothic mystery this is not for you.
Those readers who love the vivid, lyrical prose of Stewart's novels shouldn't be disappointed in this offering, although be warned, it DOES differ from her earlier works.

Thornyhold a more subtle and contemplative story then you might be used to when it comes to reading Stewart. After all, she was in her 70's when she wrote this, and I imagine she was harkening back to her youth while penning "Thornyhold". Generally absent is the suspense and romance so magically woven throughout in "The Moonspinners", "Madam, Will You Talk" or "This Rough Magic". Instead, there is a magic of another kind here a gentle, hearth-and-home-loving tale of a home well loved and much desired, and an ode to the beauty of a time and place now gone but fondly remembered by the author.

I can't really put into words how much this story affected me. It was as if Stewart had looked into my heart much like cousin Geillis looked into Gilly's heart and provided the nourishment for her soul that she craved.

...and Stewart did the same for me with "Thornyhold".
An excellent writer in suspense with strong heroines who actually are, without being perfectly pretty super powered teenagers to prove it, Mary Stewart is a gem worth rediscovering. And thanks to a prompt bookseller with great customer services, I'm doing just that.
This is a story told by a woman looking back at her life. She tells of her lonely childhood when she was neglected by her parents and bullied at her boarding school. She tells of the life she lived as a pastor's daughter in a dirty, ugly coal town. She tells of the few, magical visits by her godmother.

She also tells what happens when she inherits Thornyhold after that same godmother's death. She describes the beauty of the house, gardens and countryside. She also describes her interactions with the local witch who is her rival for the affections of a widowed author who lives nearby. This story also tells us about how she fell in love with that same author and his young son.

Woven into the story are some magical elements. Her godmother was a herbalist and maybe she was also a witch. And maybe Gilly herself has inherited the potential to be a witch too. It describes incidents that could be magical in nature but could also have natural explanations.

The book is set in the time just after World War II and in a part of England that is still very much behind the times. She travels by bicycle and doesn't have a telephone. Until her arrival and her encounters with would-be witch Agnes Trapp, no one ever locked their doors and neighbors felt free to just walk in. Mentions are made of rationing and coupons though shortages aren't as noticeable in this rural area.

This was a quick read. It had lovely descriptions and lyrical writing. It was definitely a gentle Gothic romance.
This is a charming fantasy tale of a white witch who bequeathed an enchanted cottage to her niece. The niece has had a hard, barren life living with her family in the coal mining towns of northern England and is delighted to now be living at Thornyhold. She meets a neighbor woman who is also a witch and a charming neighbor who is a widower with a sweet young son. There are cats, rescued dogs, and magical pigeons in the attic as well as recipes for magical love potions (one of which is dedicated to be used on the widower but which goes astray ). .
