This book is the sequel to The Warrior Heir and...was pretty good. First of all, there was the story, pretty original, enjoyable and interesting. Some exciting aspects were the action and unpredictable plot twists. It was well written, with lots of character development. It's even evident for Jack, the main character of the first book, who is changed by his previous experiences, He is not a naive kid anymore and has a harder time trusting people because of the thick deceit that used to surround his life. Seph, the main character of The Wizard Heir, changes from the beginning to the end. While he is at the Havens, a 'reform school', he undergoes torture and creulty, as well as having friends killed off by the evil Dr. Leicester. After he leaves the Havens, he is emotionally and mentally stronger, and he even says that he became "insensitized". At the same time it is hard for him to talk about his horrific experiences at the Havens. Ellen has also learned to relax, since she is not being used for someone else's agenda for once.
What makes it 4 stars instead of 5? Pacing, and not creative solutions to the story's problems. I feel like I should have liked this book more than I did. I liked it well enough, but it was easy for me to become distracted while reading this book. I actually started it in...March? But then a book I wanted to read more came out, so I read that instead. I just picked it back up on Sunday. With an amazing and breathtaking read my eyes can be glued to the words all day, but with The Wizard Heir, I found myself starting to just want to check the computer for stuff or go do something else. One big problem was the pacing. Seph spends the first 200 pages in the Havens, and about half of that time going like this, "My dreams were filled with torture. I looked worse every day. The Alumni kept pushing me to join them. Leceister knows I can't hold out much longer." It just got boring. When Linda finally gets him out, I was hoping the story would finally begin. It got better, but the pacing was just too slow, with too many unnecessary discriptions.
Another thing is that many times that there seemed to be any unsolvable problems, Chima would simply introduce a new character who would change the rules. This happens when Linda gets Seph out of the Havens, when Ellen saves Madison and Seph from the Alumni, SPOILER when Jason shows up in the basement where Hastings and Seph were being kept, and more. SPOILER END.
So overall, a book that I would rather have borrowed from the library than bought, but I'm still glad to have read it. FOR MORE GO TO theteenagebibliophile(dot)com

Book book of the original etiology, later extended to five - the last two featuring different players, and some of the original make cameo appearances. I love the first three as a set, and have re-read them numerous times.

The author seems like a genuinely nice lady too bonus!

Check them out if you like magic, and fantasy - you will not be sorry.
Very good book. Slightly older audience than Harry Potter (teen and older) but written in similar vein. Good Fantacy. If you like Narnia, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings or others in this genre you will likely like this book.
I really liked that this was a clean book for teens/youth. It is a very different story than the first of this series and there is no intersection until 1/2 way through. It makes it nice as it introduces new characters and a lot of development from the first book. It was not a re-hash of the original characters or story. This could have stood on its own, but it is more enjoyable that it integrates the independent story into the known universe and interacts with the old characters well. I'd recommend this to those who like youth fiction, crossover/mashup stories (wizards in the modern era), and fantasy fans.
AFter reading the Warrior Heir I was very impressed. Now after finishing The Wizard Heir I'm stunned. This book starts off excellent. It's a page turner. Seph is a very likable main character and Liecaster is the perfect bad guy. The author does a great job of making the reader feel as they are actually a fly on the wall watching this play out. The mystery of who is Seph's real parents is maintained throughout the book and revealed close to the end. I must tell you, I had no clue who his parents were. I felt for Seph when trapped at the Havens, the author makes you feel as he'll never escape. Jason is just what Seph needs and keeps the story flying. Madison plays a very interesting role in this book. I hope to see more of her and Seph in the next book. Jack is here from the Warrior Heir along with Ellen, I still love them just as I did in the first. If you are looking for a great series full of sword fights, magic, seers, enchanters, wizards, good and evil, this is the series/book for you.
This second installment revealed the lineage of Seph McCauley. Finally, my unanswered questions about Linda and Hasting from book one were explained in this book. The unrelenting Wizards were at it again...causing havoc to the other members of the guild. They wanted to abolish the amended Rules of Engagement transpired in book one and bring back the old system that would only favor the Wizards. With the arrogance of Leicester and D'Orsay, they overlooked several things that brought their demise. It's another well-written and entertaining novel by Ms. Chima.
I read this book and finished it this morning. First of all, I am an 11 year old boy who is using my Mom's account with permission, so bear with me. I literally stayed up till 10 for 4 nights in a row reading this D !! It took about a day for it to start getting really awesome, but once it did, I couldn't put it down.
I loved it. I have read The Warrior Heir also, and I reccomend that you read that first, it makes the book better. I am on the Dragon Heir now! I loved it and it has all the characters from the first book about halfway in. There is a VERY unexpected twist about Linda Downey and Lee Hastings at the end. Seph is the main character, and his parents are apparently dead. He has been told the same lie over and over Your dad was a software engineer, died in a fire. He looked at his birth records and they were FAKE. He can't find his parents, and he is an untrained wizard, but those become the least of his troubles when he is kicked out of Toronto for causing a fire. Then, he find out he is being sent to a boys only school. He is very angry, because having no girls in a school can be really tough! Then, he finds out that this weird headmaster guy is a wizard who will train Seph for a big cost. There are lots of twists, and I absolutely loved it!
